Why the History of Chess Boards and Pieces Exites Me

By: Muna wa Wanjiru

]]>

According to history sources chess is one of the oldest games to have survived to our modern days. First designed in the Far East, chess boards were present in the Chinese culture in the 2nd century BC, though some specialists claim that the game was already known in India long before that. Incontestable proofs of the chess existence are dating back only to the 7th century AD, when it was very popular in the Middle East, particularly today’s Iran. Chess boards function and the rules to use each piece were inscribed in Persian poems and other literary forms. After it spread throughout the Muslim world, chess came to Europe via Spain during the Moor invasion.

The popularity of the game is easy to explain in the military context that one way or another has dominated the history of mankind ever since its beginnings. Chess boards are the figurative battlefields where kings and queens face each other in conflicts that rely on strategy, shrewdness and incredible intelligence. For the ancient Chinese, who worshiped their emperor, or for the wary Persians, chess boards made possible life representations at a smaller scale. Though there is no physical contest as such on historic chess boards, the game is appealing to even the most peace-loving person. Chess is definitely the great mind challenger!

Furthermore, with the upsurge of the Internet and the importance gained by the virtual world, chess boards become true mined fields online. If card playing is about luck, fate has absolutely no word to say in the creation of a chess strategy: there are head-on attacks and troop maneuvers, bluffing and trap setting all imagined by the player’s intelligence. Sometimes players have to sacrifice their pieces in order to successfully end an ambush and finally capture the king, and colors, animations and sounds make interactive chess playing a lot more fun than traditional game forms.

Getting to be represented on chess boards in world tournaments could be a great honor and a true distinction for many chess lovers all over the world. There are zonal, inter-zonal, continental and finally world challenges for anyone who takes chess playing to a professional level. Though, in the past chess may have been considered as a sport of the aristocracy, our modern society no longer leaves room for such limitations. Chess continues a tradition and a link with the past, extending over centuries and nations all alike; when you’re a chess lover you’re beyond nationality.

By: Carl
Posted: Oct 29, 2008

Chess also known as western chess or international chess is a competition level game played between two competitors. This game was started in 15th century in Southern Europe. Chess is one of the most popular game of the world played by thousand of people at clubs, homes, competitions, online etc. Chess is played on a square shaped chess board having 64 square boxes arranged in a manner of eight by eight series. Chess is a recreational game with a combination of black and white pieces. One player controls white pieces and another holds the black. The scope of this game is to find checkmate state of competitor’s king. In some conditions king is under attack and there is no chance to win the game.

History of Chess: Chess originated in India from 6th century but the modern
game developed in 1450-1850. It is also known as Shatranj which is an arabic word. It became popular in Western Europe and Russia in the 9th century. After that it moved to France in 18th century. The first chess tournament was played in London in 1851 and it was won by Steinitz who then became world’s first official chess champion and kept this title till 1854. The world Chess Federation was developed in 1924 in Paris.

How to play : At the start of this game each player has sixteen pieces in which one is king, one queen, two rocks, two knights, two bishops and eight pawns. The board has 8 rows called ranks and 8 columns called files. The color of the square boxes on the board is alternate like some of them are light and rest are of dark color. White pieces move first then players move one by one pieces in alternate manner. Pieces are moved to unoccupied squares of opponent’s side. When two pieces are moved simultaneously then castling happens. When a king is under attack of opponent’s pieces then this is called check situation. Try to move the king in opposite direction to secure it from attack. The objective of Chess is to checkmate the opponent member and it occurs only when competitor’s king is in check state. Chess is mostly played with time control. Time ranges for long chess games is near about seven hours including one hour for each game and for shorter is two or three hours including fifteen minutes for each player. The game is automatically lost when the player’s time runs out before completion of the game.

Tips To Joining The Right Chess Match

By: David Powers
Posted: Jun 05, 2010

]]>

Did you know that chess dates back to the olden times? Historians will point you to an early version of the game that was once enjoyed by the Persians. That version was notably played not for pleasure but for strategic rehearsal. Both peasants and nobles of medieval Europe also took a liking for chess.

People who play chess like the game and love other chess players. Given the luxury of time, many would wholeheartedly devote hours on planning a checkmate. Meanwhile, skilled players are usually on the lookout for tournaments to join. These matches are just the right excuse to show off a good chess player’s prowess on the chess board. The tournaments provide the chess player with a rare chance to get acquainted with other chess players, play a match or two, and, with some luck, show off his abilities.

A chess player can’t just decide one day that they want to play in a chess tournament. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the whole idea. What does take time is the time you spend in considering a myriad of factors.

Check out the tournament rules

Almost every legitimate chess tournament is going to have a selection of rules that they adhere to very closely. These special guidelines shouldn’t be confused with the standard guidelines. Don’t automatically think that all chess contests are played in the same manner. The better a player knows the tournament rules, the less chance that they will do something that will get them reprimanded and maybe even kicked out of the event.

When studying chess tournaments rules, it is crucial that the player not just glance at the highlighted items. They should really sit down to review the rules, paying particular attention to guidelines about hand positioning, time between moves, etc.

Consider the duration of the tournament

You’re probably not new to some televised chess games where opponents will take hours to maneuver their chess pieces. Today, very few chess contests operate in this manner. Killing the time is largely frowned upon. In the case of speed chess, each turn must be within 3 to 5 minutes only. Otherwise, the game will be automatically forfeited. It’s not unusual for tournament organizers to give penalty points to players with no sense of time.

Notoriety

Tournaments could involve high or low stakes. Not all are for the sake of having fun. The World Chess Championships is often the goal of serious chess enthusiasts. To reach that level, they should carefully hand pick the contests which can provide the right exposure and opportunity.

Remember to rest after you’ve made your decision on which chess tournament to participate in. When you aren’t actually hooting for the win, you should mingle with the other chess players and relish the company of people who love chess just as much as you do.
